3-Grain Hot Cereal

My FAVORITE breakfast staple is a hot bowl of oatmeal, topped with fruits and nuts or brown sugar and cinnamon. It's an easy way to get a helping of whole grains, with the fun and interest of making it whatever you want it to be! This very simple recipe is a concoction of three grains used as opposed to a traditional bowl of oatmeal. These grains are the traditional oats, whole flax seed, and barley, all of which are great sources of fiber, iron, and protein, all to keep you fuller longer to start your day!

Here is what you'll need:

Ingredients
 1/3 C traditional or steel-cut oats
• 1/4 C barley
• 1 T whole flax seed
• 1 C water
• 2 t honey
• 1/2 C almond milk or reduced fat milk
• 1/2 C of berries (optional)

Directions
In a small or medium pot, bring cup of water to a boil. First, add barley and flax seed, allowing to soak up some of the water for at least 4-5 minutes. Add the oats and reduce the heat to med/high, stirring occasionally to incorporate. Allow to cook for 4-5 minutes more, then turn off your heat. While the oatmeal is still hot, add honey or other alternatives to sweeten. Last, add milk, cold to cool down to eating temperature, and add berries or other toppings of choice. Makes 1-2 servings. Enjoy!
